Big changes!

There have been some big changes going on around here!

There is now a website and the forums are all new!
There should still be some posts on this blog but I am going to try and move a lot of the show notes into their new place on the website so it can be used as a reference!
Please take a minute to poke around and website, and get signed up for the forums. There will be some exclusive content on the forums in between shows and I think I am going to run the contests out of there.

miss me?

I’ve been around, doing stuff…. I do feel bad though I promise!

I participated in the pilot episode of a new what I would call 201+ podcast (you know beyond the 101) called Divine Community!
I was also invited to participate in a panel disusions about science and religion for IncitingARiot episode 60! I still need to listen to it (ok I’ll be honest I am scared to listen to myself….) but when I get around to it if I decide I disagree with myself (I am totally allowed to do that) I will post a (retraction?/correction?/argument with myself?) but I can tell you right now this is a good example of me being the science side where I am trying to not offend people and be correct… without going 100% into my science side… if that even makes sense! HA! I confuse myself.
Enjoy!

A day without screens

I’ve heard this idea before several times on TTBOOK one of my favorite podcasts through public radio international. This idea was introduced to me by William Powers the author of Hamlet’s BlackBerry. His family has something called the internet Sabbath. For their family this happens on a Friday night and they unplug the modem and the family stays offline until Monday.

Every time I hear this I think to myself “I really need to do that… I send way too much time just refreshing webpages…” and then I do nothing. So this weekend I declared Saturday a day without screens! No TV (easy I don’t have one), no computer, no itouch/ipod/smartphone. Well I did it, and you know what? I had fun. I had way more time in the day, and I got stuff done. We didn’t stay home we went garage sale-ing, shopping, swimming, and did some exploring. Then came home and did some cooking, cleaning and crafting! It was a successful day! I was expecting to get bored but considering I was still exhausted from the week, I never felt the pull very strong. I think I am going to try and make this a regular thing, pick a day and disconnect!

So here is my challenge to you: are you addicted to your technology? No really are you showing signs of addiction? Do you refresh facebook more than once? Do you stare at twitter and wait for more messages? Are you never more than an arm’s length from your smart phone? Well? I think we are all getting addicted to our screens.

UNPLUG! Maybe a day after work, or a weekend day, or the whole weekend. Try it! Do you have hobbies you haven’t done in a while? Half-finished projects? Give it a shot!

We are witches are we not? Go for a walk and leave the phone in the car, relish in your disconnectedness. NO ONE CAN FIND YOU! (ok if you are going out on a hike it is always a good idea to leave a note or tell someone where you are going, and when you expect to be back….)

Official delay announcement

So… Turns out that it doesn’t work when you try to record two people with the internal microphones on my computer. So I tried to order a really nice one online only to hit $30 shipping or no shipping to my state…
Long story short I am going to buy the only cheap one I could find in town and… See how that works.
Sorry for the delay I just have been doing this too pong for super shitty audio!

Getting ready for the next episode: water water everywhere!

Poll: When you think of the element water what kind of water do you think of? fresh? salt? both? what images does it bring up?

Also: I am thinking about taking a break after this water episode until the minerals one and going back and making sure I have detailed posts for all the minerals and topics I have covered… do you like that idea? Get the power points and posts caught up? I got very behind with finishing grad school and moving and was more focused on getting podcasts out and I could use some time to get caught up on the reference material!

If you think that is a horrible idea…. and want podcasts as fast as I can make them…I could use some help?

Thanks! I love you guys and I love putting out my podcast! Ummm I just passed 1 year and didn’t even notice it!? How did that happen!?

paganism: the religion for life long students

Apologies for the strange sentence structure, I am almost asleep but wanted to get this out.

Deep in my mind there is a very special place. When I need to feel connected to my spirituality that is where I go. I have never had a teacher but I’ve always wanted one. I have always operated by the idea that any tools I need will come to me, I just have to be open to them. So I garage sale (small caldron was my most recent find, and that’s how I got my tarot cards), go to thrift stores, and keep my eyes open for things around the house. I have a box of very special items, but it has taken a while. A long while.

I have always said “I am a student of the earth” and that’s how I ended up in geology. I tend to chase obsessions in my life. The good thing about the earth is… its complicated. I don’t think I will ever be bored! I have found my teacher in that path, my studies. I have found my partner and best friend for life, and now I feel I am ready for my spiritual teacher.

When I started on the pagan path I was young, struggling with situations beyond my maturity level (thank you Juno for that awesome phrase), and depressed. I needed something. I tried feeling a connection at church when we went (like twice a year). Nothing. I spent long hours in the religion section of my library pouring over world religion books that were WAY beyond my reading level. Think college reference books, and I was in 6th grade. When I found this path, my immediate reaction to it was now that I look back on it what stuck.

I love my path. But there are some things about the wicca based paganism that I don’t like. For one, talking to myself. I feel stupid, and like things (that are just around) are listening. Always have. I prefer the silent, action heavy way of doing things. I like making things, arranging things, leaving out offerings, and praying. I do some spells, but not many. When I need help with something normally I already have my mundane plan of action set, and I just ask for a little help. To be perfectly honest I always feel bad asking for things, I prefer to work for them. That holds true in my life as well. I’m not one to ask for money or help unless I have exhausted all of my own resources.

I guess the problem with that approach is that when the universe sends people your way it helps to interact with them. I also consider my religion to be NOYFB (none-of-your-fucking-business). Very few friends know I have a podcast. Very few people know I am still a practicing witch. I like it that way. I feel like a lot of my shortcomings as a practitioner (my dislike of talking to myself included) would benefit from having a teacher. Sucks that I always end up in the middle of no where! Maybe realizing I need a teacher is a step on the way to really wanting a teacher enough to open up.

I know I haven’t bloged a whole lot, but that’s because I was a grad student before. Now I am employed and living somewhere new (translation I don’t really know many people here). Maybe its time for a more diverse friend group, science and religion right? I’m a pagan scientists, and a scientist thanks to being pagan. Hear me meow?

This has devolved. Sense-drive dying, eyes wanting to shut… I guess its time to close my eyes and see where my dreams take me. Good night.

Please help with the Fire Episode!

Fire:
Ok here we go again, I am going to try and get this episode out tomorrow… its going to be a lot of work so I need some help.

Fire: cleaning
Have you used fire for cleansing? When would you use it?

Fire: powers/ideas/images
when working with fire what other ideas and images come up for you?
this ties in with associations, but the images and ideas

Fire: associations
What tool, herbs, crystals, colors…. do you associate with fire?

Fire: gods/goddesses/beings
are there any in particular you use when working with the element fire?

Fire: plasma
” In physics and chemistry, plasma is a state of matter similar to gas in which a certain portion of the particles are ionized. After sufficient heating a gas dissociates its molecular bonds, rendering it into constituent atoms. Further heating leads to ionization (a loss or gain of electrons), thus turning it into a plasma, containing charged particles: positive ions and negative electrons”
Using the physics definition of plasma, does this tie into your ideas about fire?

How do you experience the element of fire?
do you have any specific experiences with fire?
I have some family history with fire I am going to share, do you have any stories?

What does fire mean to you!?

Remember: awesome prize! 🙂
